SINGAPORE: MediaCorp was the big winner at the Asian Television Awards on Thursday (Dec 3), after it took home the coveted Terrestrial Broadcaster of the Year award. Channel NewsAsia also took home the Terrestrial Channel of the Year award.

The Asian Television Awards, held this year at the Suntec Convention Centre, celebrates the best in television in the region. Thursday was the second night of the awards, and was a glitzy affair with celebrities from all around the region in attendance.

MediaCorp’s Terrestrial Broadcaster of the Year award was for the terrestrial free-to-air broadcaster that won the most Asian Television Awards and runner up awards this year, and this made it the 12th time that MediaCorp has won the title.

“I think what it really means is that no matter what form we take on, it’s the content, it’s the story-telling,” said MediaCorp CEO Shaun Seow. “And these awards actually attest to the quality of the content that my team has been producing. And so we have to keep at it – no matter what form – whether it’s a seven-minuter or a half-hour show or a one hour show, we’ve got to be good in story-telling, we’ve got to have very captivating content.”

Channel NewsAsia won Terrestrial Channel of the Year for the first time. It was the single terrestrial channel that won the most awards and runner up awards this year.

“I just want to thank everybody who believed in us 17 years ago when we launched, and who still believe in us, to help us to achieve this award, to help us help you understand Asia better,” said Ms Debra Soon, Head, Family (English) & Premier Segment.
