Goblin is a new Korean drama that premiered on 2 December on tvN. With an extraordinary plot circling around a “Dokkaebi” (Goblin) possessing an immortal life.
Not only has the series broken tvN’s premier episode ratings record, it also occupied the highest rank on the Contents Power Index for the first week of December, setting a new all-time high record with a score of 7,449 points, beating other acclaimed dramas such as DOTS (5,518 points), Reply 1988 (5,260 points) and the recently-ended Love in the Moonlight (4,720 points).
DOTS’s (Descendants of the Sun) popularity is not to be trifled with not just in South Korea but internationally, shooting already famous Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo further into stardom. Now that Goblin has broke a few records DOTS held, it may just be the next big thing.
It is no wonder the show was so successful – the scriptwriter and director worked together on DOTS as well, casting exceptional actors such as Gong Yoo and moving away from traditional Korean drama storylines such as tearjerkers and family conflicts to fantasy/supernatural drama plots.
Goblin stars Gong Yoo, which many may recognise as the lead actor in Train to Busan, as the Goblin Kim Shin as well as Kim Go Eun as Ji Eun Tak and Lee Dong Wook as the Angle of Death – Wang Yeo.
