The 21st Asian Television Awards came to a close last night with a total of 46 awards given across the two-day long event – 18 of which were presented on the trade dinner event held on 1 December and another 28 on the ‘LIVE’ show held on 2 December in front of a jam-packed hall.
Apart from the usual crowd favourites, this year’s award ceremony also set the stage for a few (very deserving) dark horses to shine; shedding light on how competitive the television scene really is.
Descendants of the Sun clinched the “Best Drama Series” award amidst piercing screams by dedicated fans of the South Korean series. Adding onto South Korea’s wins is MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) that managed to clinch the “Best Entertainment (One-Off/Annual)” award. “Best Actor in a Leading Role” sees a dark horse when Chen Kun-Chang won for his work in The Taste of Dang-Liang’s Family, beating the crowd favourite Christopher Lee.
The big winner of Asian Television Awards 2016 is A Touch of Green – a Taiwanese drama series bagging 5 awards in total including 2 of the highly competitive categories “Best Actress in a Supporting Role” and “Best Actress in a Leading Role”. Its broadcaster – Public Television Service Foundation also clinched the “Terrestrial Channel of the Year” award with PTS.
Following the “Terrestrial Channel of the Year”, “Cable and Satellite Channel of the Year” went to Al Jazeera English, “Terrestrial Broadcaster of the Year” went to Mediacorp Pte Ltd and lastly “Cable and Satellite Network of the Year” went to Al Jazeera English.
The winner of the “Best Comedy Performance by an Actor/Actress” went to Carla Dunareanu beating the likes of Vernetta Lopez and Michael V, “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” went to Jeff Catz.
