Brand new Netflix Original Series, The Get Down, launches today (12 August 2016) at 3pm. It is about the rise of hip-hop and the last days of disco in 1970s New York. Here are 5 things you need to know about the Netflix Original Series.

  1. Part one of The Get Down, comprising six episodes, will be available for streaming for all Netflix members in Singapore from today. Part two will debut in 2017.

  2. The Get Down was shot partly on location in the Bronx, and also filmed across the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and soundstages in Glendale, Queens.

  3. Look out for the custom panel on the back of Jaden Smith’s signature outfit – a denim vest – in the show. It was designed by Lady Pink, famed graffiti artist in New York, also known as the first lady of graffiti.

  4. To stay true to the authenticity of the period, a 1970s boot camp was set up during filming to teach the actors how to DJ, hold a microphone and do fancy footwork of the era. Hip-hop legend Rahiem helped the actors learn how to perform in a classic hip-hop style.

  5. Some of the DJing and scratching you hear in the show was created by Grandmaster Flash, one of the pioneers of hip-hop DJing and mixing, and who is also the Associate Producer of The Get Down.

Launched in 1996, Asian Television Awards is positioned as the only event of its kind within the Asian region, and upholds a prestigious reputation of showcasing quality television production. Determined by an expert panel of over 60 judges from across the region, the results are tabulated and audited by international auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, with the winners only announced during the Awards Ceremony in December. The proceedings of Asian Television Awards continue to be televised regionally reaching to more than 50 million households (and growing) across Asia.
