Last year, as part of our efforts to reach for to younger audiences for the Asian Television Awards, we started our Snapchat account at AsianTVawards. Today, the desire to reach out to millennials is a very attractive proposition to television executives who are faced by the challenge of younger audiences viewing content on social platforms like Facebook and YouTube.

Comedy Central & MTV partner with Snapchat

Comedy Central and MTV are cosying up with the youth centric social media platform, as part of the agreement which Viacom (their parent company) signed with Snapchat.

“… Snapchat captures young audiences on an intimate and immersive mobile video platform while Viacom is the leader in premium long- and short-form storytelling for these same audiences…” – Wade Davis, CFO, Viacom

The wide ranging deal includes content production and advertising sales. It brings Viacom’s two high profile channels to Snapchat Discover – a Comedy Central International channel and an MTV Channel in the U.S., which will complement the already successful Comedy Central and MTV International Discover channels. The agreement also grants Viacom the right to sell Snapchat’s U.S. owned and operated advertising inventory, allowing Viacom to offer even more value to television advertisers who want to add Snapchat’s wildly popular premium video platform to the media mix. In addition, Viacom also has agreed to provide Snapchat with expanded access so Snapchat can produce Live Stories covering more of Viacom’s tent pole events.

Comedy Central launches internationally today on Snapchat Discover

The new international channel will serve Snapchat users daily doses of comedy, from curated “WTF News” articles and exclusive videos with their favourite comedians to upcoming original series set to debut on Snapchat Discover in the coming year.

With linear TV facing declining audience ratings with OTT platforms like Netflix, will this deal be the launchpad for more agreements between TV networks and the social media network? #StayTuned!
